Apaixonado por uma linda autoestrada

O que acontece quando um David Byrne meio lunático se junta a Johnny Marr, o eterno guitarrista e compositor dos Smiths? Nada (a não ser flores).

Nothing (but flowers) é mais um daqueles temas que me levam a crer que Johnny Marr imortaliza tudo onde mete a palheta. É um tema do último álbum dos Talking Heads, e juro que até há cinco minutos atrás pensava que era uma singela inspiração africana, mas Marr desdiz essa teoria na revista Uncut de Fevereiro de 2008:

«When I got there they put down some bass and drum tracks. '(Nothing But) Flowers' sounded almost like a Reggae dub track. I wasn't trying to play in an African style - although some people pointed out that I sometimes sound like that anyway! I knew all about King Sunny Ade (performer of Nigerian juju music) and I love Fela Kuti (Nigerian multi-instrumentalist) but really I just played melodies that sounded good in a high range. The intro to 'Flowers' was me playing without knowing the tape machine was on - that's how little attention I paid to any kind of remit! I built that track from the ground up. I was impressed with what David (Byrne) did on it. He worked super quickly on it.»

Já não bastavam os Smiths, os The The, os Electronic e recentemente os Modest Mouse, o pequeno Johnny tinha ainda de nos oferecer esta pérola de alegria despretensiosa pós-apocalíptica, engrandecendo ainda mais a imprescindível
obra dos Talking Heads. Bastaria «Remain in light» para encher as medidas pop de qualquer um, mas há muito mais em Byrne e Ca.

Não poderia deixar este breve apontamento sobre os Heads sem mencionar o magnífico filme que documenta a banda ao vivo: «Stop making sense», um luxo, é o que se pode dizer.
